On August 28 - 30th 172 of our 196 teams competed in our Provincial Year End Tournament.
Four Spirit Champions and 26 Divisional Champions were crowned.
All of Winnipeg was forced to endure the worst summer weather in recorded history for our city this year.
Late Friday night we got one more blast of rain but nothing was going to stop the sun from finally coming out this weekend.
In the end we had two beautiful days of action and 212 total games were played.

The roots of our sport are based deeply on mutual respect, sportsmanship and fairplay. Each year MODS likes to recognize the teams that achieve the highest regognition in this area. As most of you will notice our Spirit Trophy is considerably larger then our "League Champions" trophies. This is not by accident, in our ongoing pursuit to raise the awareness level fo the importance of "Spirit of the Game" here are your 2009 Summer League Spirit Champions

MONDAY - FLAP
TUESDAY - YIELD
(2nd longest running active franchise I believe)
WEDNESDAY - RED ALERT
(pictured on right)
THURSDAY - Completely Klueless Too

These 4 teams along with our Fall League Spirit Champions will enjoy a free party at the Fort Garry Brewery in late October.

For many the road to the championships was long. With many players playing on multiple nights it was a busy day as games began as early as 8:30am and finished as late as 8:20pm. I would like to completely update the playoff brackets but a lot of the results were not turned in. (If you know that your score was not submitted please email it to me),

MONDAY

With the folding of the Wednesday "A" league Monday became the new top tier in Ultimate.
KA and the SUPERS were the top teams all year and they advanced to the Sunday finals as expected.
The Supers were without several key players and lost another to injury on Sunday. KA in a very spirited move allowed the Supers to p/up Jared Lehotsky for the game so they would have a male sub. From what I've seen the last few years this was the most competitive and exciting "A" finals in recent memory. Kudos to both teams for putting on a great show for the crowd. Sean Brooks of the Supers was named MVP of the game.

Congrats to all of the teams that won.
We can't all be champs but for many there was a game they won that was like winning a championship.

Huge thanks to...

Robert Campbell (MODS Board Member): Rob who is on the shelf because of an injury devoted his whole weekend to helping run the tournament. We couldn't have done it without him.
Jodi Ryzowski: Normally Jodi has to help with the delivery of the all of the equipment to and from the fields but this weekend she also took on the additional role of tournament baker. The 2:00am cookie baking session was appreciated by all. On top of that she helped with additional shopping and has to put up with me 24 / 7 so for that alone she deserves a medal.
Graham and Yengin: The MODS summer employees helped to keep the ship sailing smoothly all weekend long. The tournament marked the end of their seasons for us. Graham in particular was working his second summer in a row and was invaluable to myself and the organization in everything he did.

Photography: Many of the usual suspects in this area left their cameras at home. Luckily some other people stepped up. Thanks to Ron Cantiveros, Lee Crierie as well as the several team captains who emailed me their photos.
IF YOU HAVE GOOD PHOTOS FROM THE WEEKEND WE WOULD LOVE TO SEE THEM!
Please send them to Corey.

Thanks to all of the captains and players who are involved in our sport.
We have an amazing community of people and it was great to see everyone enjoying themselves this weekend.

I hope you'll take advantage of the opportunities with upcoming hat tournaments, Indoor Winter league and the Women's Indoor league. Otherwise we hope to see you next spring.

thanks

Corey Draper
