Junior Provincials Results Print E-mail

The Middle and High School Junior Provincials were held on May 23 & 24th at Assiniboine Park on the best weekend we've seen yet. 19 teams from 14 schools competed to crown this years Provincial Champions.

MIDDLE SCHOOL

We were anticipating a rematch of last years final and we got it. In 2008 Lincoln knocked off SJR and ended their streak of Junior Titles. Both teams were looking to take the title again. Licncoln and SJR accounted for 5 of the 9 Middle School teams at the tournament. On Saturday they met as as undefeated teams at the end of the day. In a very close game Prairie Fire won 9 - 8 which set the stage for the Sunday playoffs. Both teams won their way through the draw to the Sunday afternoon showdown. SJR managed to really break Lincolns zone and moved the disc quite well. While the game looked much closer the eventual final score was 15 - 4 for Prairie Fire. Many thanks to all of the coaches and parents who helped make this a success. The Lincoln Tazers were able to soften the blow of the loss when they found out that they were the tournament's Spirit Champions. Congrats to everyone.

HIGH SCHOOL

Many expected an SJR Varsity vs Elmwood final but that is not how things would unfold.
On Saturday Elmwood dominated their division, there was a lot of parity in this pool as Sturgeon Heights shocked everyone by knocking off SJR 2 to begin the day. By the end of the day Westwood, Sturgeon and SJR 2 had 2 - 2 records and the underdog 10th seeded Huskies claimed the 2nd spot in the pool. Vincent Massey worked hard but ended up at the bottom.
The other bracket saw SJR Varsity dominate, but Kelvin also showed that they were legitimate contenders. Glenlawn was 2 - 2; Gordon Bell and Miles Mac finished with losing records.

Sunday's quarters saw SJR Varsity defeat Gordon Bell, Elmwood defeated Glenlawn after being down 4 - 0, Kelvin beat Westwood and SJR 2 avenged their loss to Sturgeon. Elmwoods struggles against Glewnlawn were a foreshadow to their semi final loss to Kelvin. SJR Varsity dipatched SJR 2 and we were set for a Kelvin vs SJR Varsity final.

The crowd was treated to a terrific game as Kelvin gave SJR everything they could hanlde.
The momentum changed several times and even when it looked like SJR had things wrapped up Kelvin roared back.
In the end SJR won 15 - 13 in a thrilling victory. Congrats to all of the teams and to Gordon Bell for claiming the Spirit Prize.

As is customary we announced the 2009 Graduating All Stars after the finals.
