SATURDAY

COMPETITIVE: Huge thanks to Swarm for splitting their squad to fill out the division. Chaos went in seeded number 1 and held serve as they went 3 - 0 in their division (4 - 0) overall. "Skills" came close to beating Chaos in a heated match up but fell just short. The 2 split Swarm squads fought hard but had a rough day. Chaos finished Saturday in 1st, Skills was 2nd, Swarm 1 was 3rd and Swarm 2 was 4th.

REC A/B: Defending champs "The Big Lebowski" were in full form (costumes and all). There was some good parity in this division as BLITZ upset the veteran squad "May Contain Nuts". Props to "Shenanigans" for competing in this division without their long time leader Mark Sememenek (who was playing with Chaos). "May Contain Nuts" regained their confidence with a HUGE win in an exhibition cross over game vs Swarm 1. They won on a universe point and the celebration could be heard from a disctance. Lebowski held onto the top seed, BLITZ was 2nd, May Contain Nuts was 3rd and Shenanigans was 4th.

REC C/D: Bay Watch (Thunder Bay) returned to defend their 2008 Skeeters title and proved on Saturday that they were a stronger squad then last year. My thanks to Magnum and Flying Fiesta for stepping up to the C/D bracket to make the schedule work. Theory of a Discman kept their travelling couch tradition alive and could be heard around the park with their megaphone. The division also included the Fighting Artichokes, Hucksterbation and YIKES!. YIKES primarily made up of former Elmwood students and a few savvy veterans were the only squad able to hang with Bay Watch. Their game ended in a tie and a point differential gave Thunder Bay the top seed for Sunday. YIKES took 2nd, Theory of a Discman (3rd), Hucksterbation (4th), Flying Artichokes (5th), Magnum (6th) and Flying Fiesta (7th).
A late start allowed teams to stay at the party a little later. "May Contain Nuts" won the party for sure.

A4 vs C1 : Shenanigans faced off vs Bay Watch to see who would compete in the A/B semis. Thunder Bay was hungry for the win and a chance to prove themselves and they got it. C4 vs C5 : Hucksterbation beat out The Fighting Artichokes to remain on the C-Side.

D Division: Flying Fiesta and Magnum hooked up as part of the 3 game round robin to determine a D division champ (the Artichokes joined this group). The Saturday game between the two ended in a tie. The rematch on Sunday was not as close. Fiesta was struggling for numbers and their short handed squad couldn't hang in there. Magnum took that momentum and ran with it as they upset the Fighting Artichokes to take the D division crown.
C Division: Shenanigans rebounded from their cross over loss and dispatched Hucksterbation while YIKES defeated Theory of a Discman to set up the C Final. YIKES won the game and Huckstebation was crowned the C/D SPIRIT CHAMPS.
A/B Division: Bay Watch matched up with top seeded team in A/B (The Big Lebowski) and used a height advantage to storm out to a huge lead and take half 7 - 3. Luckilly a switch to zone reversed the teams fortunes and the battered Lebowski group led by Trevor Horvath managed the comeback to make the finals. The Thunder Bay group proved they belonged to be in the higher division next year. In the other semi May Contain Nuts avenged their Saturday loss to BLITZ and set up a compelling final. Lebowski came out with a quick 5 - 1 lead but it was clear the game was not over. Injuries and a small bench took their toll as "NUTS" roared back to close the gap before half. The Big Lebowski was able to lean heavily on their women and finished off the job. The win was sweetened when the team found out that they had also captured the A/B SPIRIT PRIZE. ("The Dude Abides").

COMPETITIVE: The semis saw Chaos defeat Swarm 2 while the young "SKILLS" team took care of Swarm 1. The crowd was treated to a thrilling final with tons of great plays. It was a tight game that swung back and forth. SKILLS proved they had just that and started to pull away from Chaos in the 2nd half. An incredible "Callahan" point by Quinn Keast-Wiatrowski shifted the momentum but the kids would not be denied. A huge hand block by Graeme Crawford was all they would need to prevent Chaos from making a comeback. SKILLS upset a Chaos squad that was playing without a few key starters who were down with injuries. Full marks for an entertaining game. Mark Lloyd was named the MVP by his peers. SWARM 2 claimed the Competitive SPIRIT PRIZE.

A huge thanks to everyone for playing. Special thanks to Mercy Au for the baking (Hummus, eggs and Rice Krispie Cake), Paul Simpson for these photos, Karla Pratt for volunteering all weekend long at Disc Central and Graeme MacDonald for babysitting the Golf Cart again.
