Player Code of Conduct

All members of MODS are expected to understand and abide by the following code of conduct.

Players and teams are expected to:

  1. Maintain and promote the Spirit of the Game.

Ultimate relies upon a spirit of sportsmanship that places the responsibility for fair play on the player. Highly competitive play is encouraged, but never at the expense of mutual respect among competitors, adherence to the agreed upon rules, or the basic joy of play. Protection of these vital elements serves to eliminate unsportsmanlike conduct from the Ultimate field. Such actions as taunting opposing players, dangerous aggression, belligerent intimidation, intentional infractions, or other “win-at all- costs” behaviour are contrary to the spirit of the game and must be avoided by all players.” [UPA 11th edition rules, I.B]

  1. Adhere to the agreed upon rules of the game. Players should be familiar with the 11th edition Rules of Ultimate, as well as the league-specific WUL rules amendments and Winter League amendments where applicable. While it is recognised that players (and particularly novice players) may not be familiar with every rule for every situation, they should know enough to apply the rules for most game situations, be receptive to learning rules when they do not know, and know how to deal with disagreements when they occur. Remember that Ultimate is a self-refereed sport and the more complete and consistent players’ rules knowledge is, the better the game will function.

  2. Respect other players, including your teammates and opponents. Play fairly and with the expectation that others are doing the same. Recognise that when an infraction occurs it is generally due to ignorance or accident and not malice; likewise when a call is made it is generally due to an unintended infraction and should not be considered an accusation or insult. Understand that perspectives may differ and disagreements may occur but they should be settled calmly and as quickly as possible. If you disagree with a call, simply contest it and the game can be resumed. Show other players respect and you will get respect back.

  3. Play safe. Ultimate is a non-contact sport, and players are expected to avoid contact wherever possible. Never engage in dangerous play or reckless behaviour which risks injury. Be aware of other players on the field and know that “I was going for the disc” is never a valid excuse for initiating contact. Also, recognise dangerous conditions which may endanger players (lightning, impending darkness, unsafe field conditions) and take precautions to avoid harm. Keep equipment, spectators, children, dogs etc. a safe distance from sidelines to avoid the potential for collisions from the field.

  4. Respect spectators, passersby, and other users of the park. Most playing spaces used by MODS are in public areas with shared or adjacent uses. Behave respectfully and project a positive public image to ensure we will continue to have access to these facilities. Where there is a dispute over use of the fields or another conflict (such as a passerby wandering onto the field), address it in a calm and respectful manner. If there are repeated or systematic conflicts (e.g. double-booking of fields), the matter should be forwarded to MODS to prevent repeat occurrences.

  5. Respect MODS rules and policies. Through your membership in MODS you agree to abide by all MODS policies when involved in league or other MODS-sponsored events. Policies are in place for reasons including ensuring player safety, protecting fields and ensuring continued access to playing space and other resources allowing MODS to continue to offer services to its members.

  6. Have fun. Remember why you’re playing the game, and keep it enjoyable for everyone involved.
