Continuation after a pick call 2010/07/23 03:41 Karma: 0
A pick is called that affects the play as a throw is made. That throw is completed, but the receiver does not acknowledge the pick call and throws an incomplete pass. Is this a turnover or does the pick call only stand on the affected play (i.e. the first throw, which was completed, so disc goes back to the original thrower)? I've seen this played both ways.
Thanks

The play is stopped after the first completion. So it would not be a turn over the disc needs to come back to that thrower. Josh will likely post the relevant wording from the actual rules. This is part of the continuation rule that frustrates players that are not aware of it. Take it away Josh...

Thanks for the setup Corey... I don't relish quoting the continuation rule as it is so unbearably wordy but I'll try to keep it short and only to the relevant points.

My bolding and comments where applicable:

XVI.C. Any time an infraction is called, the continuation rule applies. Continuation Rule: Play stops when the thrower in possession acknowledges that an infraction has been called. If a call is made when the disc is in the air or the thrower is in the act of throwing, or if the thrower fails to acknowledge the call and subsequently attempts a pass, play continues until the outcome of that pass is determined. For the purpose of the continuation rule, an uncontested stall that occurs after another call is treated the same as an incomplete pass. Play then either stops or continues according to the following conditions:

[note: the rule refers to the outcome of "that pass" meaning the single pass during/after the call, and not any subsequent passes. Continuation refers to the outcome of one pass only.]

<snip>
2.For calls made by a non-thrower:
a.If the team that called the infraction has possession:

[note: possession meaning which team has possession following the outcome of the pass]

<snip>
2.If the offense called the infraction after the thrower began the act of throwing or if the defense called the infraction, play continues un-halted. Players should announce “play on.”

In a pick call, XVI.C.2.a.2 applies when there is a pick call but the first pass (i.e. the one that is in the air at the time of the call, or the pass made after the pick call if the thtrower does not hear/acknowledge the pick call) is incomplete or iontercepted. In this case the turnover stands and there is no stoppage, call "play on".

b.If the team that committed the infraction has possession:
1.If the infraction affected the play (XVI.C.3), play stops and the disc reverts to the thrower unless the specific rule says otherwise.
2.If the infraction did not affect the play, play stops and the result of the play stands.

These would apply in the case where pick was called and the next pass was caught. play stops in either case when the pass is completed. Any additional pass(es) would not count until play is resolved and the disc is checked in by the defence. XVI.C.2.b.1 is the case where the pick affected the pass which was completed (i.e. the defender was prevented from defending the receiver that caught the disc due to the pick) and the disc is returned to the original thrower. XVI.C.2.b.2 is the case where the pick was away from the play and did not affect that particular pass; in this case the disc stays with the receiver but play is still stopped and restarts after a check by the defence. In either case, the defender who is picked is allowed to recover the position lost due to the pick, before the disc is checked in.
