What we have done?

The Winnipeg Ultimate League Situation

The Winnipeg Ultimate League has had a field levy built into fees since the early 1990's. As a result we have saved a significant amount of money to put towards fields. We have looked for other fields rent, but there is a lack of quality fields available. As a result we looked into developing a field committee in 2003 to pursue the development of Ultimate fields.

Quick Facts about the Committee:

    *      Started meeting in October 2003

    *      Chaired by MODS Program Director Danny Saunders

   *      The committee is comprised of 8 volunteers from the membership with expertise & experience in Government, Finance, Landscape Architecture, Fundraising and Law.

Field Committee Vision: To acquire & develop a suitable venue specifically for the playing of Ultimate in Winnipeg, that will complement the existing fields used throughout the City of Winnipeg

Process so far:

    *      Put together a business plan for field development & operation

   *      Looked at the possibility of buying vs. leasing. We discovered that MODS cannot afford to both purchase and develop a suitable site. As a result we looked at other facilities: John Blumberg Softball Park, Maple Grove Rugby Park & the St. Vital Mustangs Football Club. All of these groups have long term agreements with the city of Winnipeg that cost $1/year.... a much more affordable venture

    *      Undertook a comprehensive site selection assessment of available City green space. It tended to be on the outskirts of the city.

    *      Met with City Official, the Provincial Government & other stakeholders

    *      Pursued Fundraising initiatives
