What is WYUL? WYUL is an initiative to deliver summer, fall and winter Ultimate leagues and programs for Winnipeg Youth. The league will run 3 age groups at various sessions throughout the year. The program focuses on skill development, Spirit of the Game and fun as well as team concepts at the older ages.
FORMAT: Programs range from 6 to 12-week sessions. During the spring and summer WYUL will run at Assiniboine Park and in the fall and winter months the programs will run indoors at WSF South and the Linden Woods Community Center. Sessions range from 60 to 90 minutes depending on the program and season. Check the Junior Program page to see specific info and registration info.
Goals and Objectives: MODS sees WYUL as the vehicle to grow our junior participation. Our mid term goals would be to expand participation to the point that we can look at additional age categories, regionalized teams and multiple divisions. WYUL Grades 3 to 5 is a fun way to introduce kids to the sport of Ultimate. WYUL Grades 6 to 8 is a good entry point and also serves experienced players from our school league. WYUL Grades 9 to 12 is a fall / winter only program that is geared towards more experienced players and has a heavy focus on game play and strategy. Spirit of the game, skills and drills and some rules of the week are incorporated into each session. The group will have two experienced and record checked coaches.
"SPIRIT OF THE GAME": Ultimate is unique in that it is a self officiated sport. All calls are made by the players on the field, sportsmanship, fair play, respect for your opponents and teammates and conflict resolution are all keys to the sport. Parents are reminded that calls can't be made by spectators or players / coaches on the sidelines. Please keep your interactions respectful and fun. Ultimate is a great game and youth players have a lot to gain by playing in this inclusive and supportive atmosphere.
LTAD: MODS is following the concepts of "Long Term Athlete Development", Sport Canada supports this model which is geared towards age appropriate activities for athletes. MODS will use a few junior specific rules to encourage more skill development. Games at times will be played 5 on 5 (4 on 4 if numbers require) to increase the amount of touches for each participant. Reduced field sizes and a "no zone" rule will also be in place for the two younger aged programs. The LTAD module for this age of physical literacy is Learn to Play.
Expanding WYUL: MODS partnered with the Lindenwoods Community Centre to run our WYUL Grade 3 to 5 program in the fall of 2021 and winter 2022. MODS is exploring options to continue that partnership this spring with potential programs at Lindenwoods and Whyte Ridge. A medium range goal is to create new programs at community centres in other regions of Winnipeg. If you would like to see Ultimate added at your centre (in your area) please contact Corey at the link below.
