Letter from the President - June 2021

It’s been a year, with significant progress made in how we go about our lives. The unfortunate reality is that we are not yet at a place where team sport is feasible to add back given the current strain on our provincial healthcare system, so the experts have made the tough but necessary decision that we need to be restricted to reduce the community health risk.

MODS fully supports the province's decision to apply stricter restrictions to sports at this time, as we recognize that community health and safety comes first. Given the record case numbers we have seen leading up to the announcement of the latest restrictions, this decision seemed inevitable. We also heard from many members expressing concerns about playing given the increase in cases. That’s not to say that it isn’t disappointing to not be on the field yet, however we are hopeful that as vaccine rollout begins to spread in the community with the lowering of the age eligibility that we will see the positive effects on our healthcare system and we can at some point return to play this summer with loosened restrictions.

A decision regarding the current leagues, will be made shortly as the Province has extended the shutdown to June 12th. Plans are dependent on Provincial Health, as our RTP is explicitly tied to their restrictions, so at this point it is out of our hands to say if and when that return might be. Accordingly, we will be waiting until that situation is clear before making a decision on potential refunds. The MODS refund policy is available on the website for your reference.

Should you have any questions, please reach out to Corey or myself. We appreciate your continued patience with us as we are managing with a single full time staff person and volunteer support during the leadership transition in the office.

On a different note, I’d like to personally extend my thanks to Jesse for his time with the board. The contributions to the member forum and governance were valuable to MODS and we look forward to his continued involvement in our community.

Please refer to the newsletter for information on the vacant interim board position. Applications can be sent directly to president@mods.mb.ca and will be reviewed as received.

Stay safe everyone,
