The Ultimate Canada Board of Directors recently met and made the difficult decision to cancel all in-person competition until August 31, 2020. This includes the 2020 Canadian Ultimate Championships (CUC) scheduled to take place August 9-16 in Brampton, Ontario, and August 20-23 in Laval, Quebec.
The decision to cancel the 2020 CUC was made after careful consideration of public health guidelines, community consultation, and recommendations from Ultimate Canada staff, the Ultimate Canada competitions committee, and the Ultimate Canada development committee regarding event feasibility. Unfortunately, Ultimate Canada is not able to operate the events due to many factors, including restrictions that impact the maximum size of gatherings, participation in team sports, travel, and venue availability. Several municipalities, including Laval, have made the decision to cancel all field permits until August 31.
Ultimate Canada will continue to examine competitive event options for 2020 and will provide an additional update by July 4th. If we are able to host an event, it will be of a much smaller scale, and follow hosting guidelines put forward by the government and public health.
A decision regarding events beyond August 31, including the Canadian University Ultimate Championships and the Canadian 4-on-4 Ultimate Championships, has yet to be made. Ultimate Canada will continue to monitor the COVID-19 situation, and all provincial government reopening schedules.
