The top high school seeds coming into the provincial championship weekend were... from Kelvin as the defending national champions as of CUHSC and last years provincials. There was Westgate rolling into the event with a bronze medal from nationals and the top ranked player in the province. Perennial power-house SJR was in the mix with another team of well skilled players and incredible depth and rounding out the elite of the top 4 were the Westgate Wings who came in with a strong league record, great spirit and grade 12 leadership.
The semi-finals brought all 4 teams together in what was an epic and intense showdown between high school super powers. Kelvin snuck by a fiesty Westgate team en route to a provincial final return (9-6) while Gray Academy and SJR came down to a final point with Gray advancing 10-9. When the dust settled and Kelvin defended their crown against Gray in the final, their skill and depth of grade 12 experience proved too much as Kelvin repeated as Provincial 2019 Champions.
The Spirit Champions were also back to defend their title as the most suportive and postive team in the event... The 1972 Memorial School team from Oxford House came to play this year and scored more points in their first game than they did all of last year. Over the course of the two days, the team from Nothern Manitoba won several games beating seed and improving on their initial placement. Even with the wins and victory, their leadership prioritized community, smiles and spirit above competition or wins! Hats off to these champions for their Spirit for a second year in a row!
The middle school final was another great match and culmination of young talent and great spirit. The depth of programming at St John's-Ravenscourt was once again shown off as their middle school program won the final, repeating as middle school finalists from last year and continuing to feed their juggernaught high school teams. Not to be outdone was Lincoln, who won the event against the same SJR crew the previous year. While Lincoln fell in the finals this year, it is safe to say that their feeder program at Westwood is in good hands and will have talent feeding their high school team for years to come!
