This past weekend MODS hosted its final event of the summer Manitoba Cup. The early week forecasts projected a torrential downpour to occur but thanks to some sort of miracle mother nature was friendly enough to us to allow us to play some ultimate.
Pool play commenced on Saturday morning as teams in all four divisions played their first round of pool play games. After the first rounds of games were completed teams were able to enjoy our new extended lunch break. This new feature at Manitoba Cup allowed teams to go out for a team building lunch or stay on site to enjoy the Beer Garden. Teams who stayed got the pleasure of enjoying some Torque Beer while being serenaded by live music by Curtis Newton. With the combination of some rest, food, beer, and singing along with the live music it is safe to say that this extended lunch break was a success! Following the break teams began competing again and played their remaining two games of pool play.
Sunday was not so friendly to us as we faced some light rain and strong cool wind that we have not seen much of this year. Although the wind was brutal the competition between teams was still ripe. As the day progressed teams began to pick up on a truly Canadian strategy of dump and chase ultimate frisbee. This made for lots of huge plays as people were laying out and getting up high to catch the discs that were travelling wildly in the wind. Plays such as a father son greatest in the endzone kept the energy and spirits high in the cold weather.
As the day wrapped up our four winners were:
Grey Owl – Tier 1 Champions
It’s a bye – Tier 2 Champions
The Mighty Hucks – Tier 3 Champions
Ridisculous – Tier 4 Champions
As always MODS would like to thank everyone involved for helping us to have another successful event and summer season!
