I’ve got to do what now? Well here goes nothing!
Hey everyone! For those of you that don’t know me, my name is Rob Borges and I am your new MODS President. And yes I am just as shocked as you are!
In all seriousness though, let me tell you a little about my history with MODS. I have been playing ultimate for close to 20 years now, and have been a MODS member for just as long. For the longest time just playing Ultimate every week was more than enough for me. I knew however there were a lot of people behind the scenes volunteering a crazy amount of time to keep MODS growing and moving forward. For the longest time I had no idea why someone would give up that much free time on a sports organization. To me it seemed crazy, like a whole other job you didn’t get paid for; I was part of MODS to have fun not work! And then one day I got a call from Corey, the office needed help with some computer issues and before you know it I became the unofficial tech support guy for MODS. Little did I know that would be the thin edge of the wedge. Fast forward a couple of years and MODS realized they need to upgrade the website, so again Corey calls me and asks if I want to join the website committee and again I figured heck that might be fun too! Oh how naive I was! A few years later in December 2017 I took over as the chair of the newly formed Website Working group and a month after that I joined the MODS Board. Somehow I had become one of those people volunteering a bunch of his free time! And you know what? While yes it is a lot of work, it’s been a pretty great ride and I have met and gotten to know a bunch of great people who really care about MODS.
That brings us to today. MODS now has a new website which people seem to like! I am proud to have been a small part in helping MODS find their new online home. I have a year left on my term as Board member and with Yacine stepping down I somehow convinced myself I could maybe do this president thing. At least for one year. I blame Yacine and the rest of the board! I am pretty sure they somehow incepted that idea into my head. So here I am!
I hope I am worthy of the post of President. I am looking forward to getting together with the rest of the board and the staff and setting our new goals for 2020, more to come on that soon.
There is just one more thing before I close this post out, I think it’s safe to say one of the priorities for MODS this year will be Spirit. Over the years I think we as a community have lost a lot of what made this sport so great when we first started. There have been an increasing number of incidents and injuries and it is having a major negative effect across our leagues. A spirit working group has been formed and we have been discussing steps that MODS can take in order to try and encourage better spirit. We are taking this very seriously and changes will be coming soon. But we can’t do it without buy in from our members. We want everyone to have fun out there, but never at the expense of someone else. I know in the past I have not been perfect when it comes to spirit, and I had to remind myself why I enjoyed playing in the first place. So please remember, especially when it comes to rec league. It’s about having fun, getting exercise and meeting new people! Take care of each other out there, because making a play on the disc is not worth sending yourself or someone else to the emergency room. When there is a major disagreement on a call it shouldn’t always come down to I’m right and you’re wrong, sometimes it’s about what’s the fair call for now and we can look up the rule on the sideline later. This way major shouting matches can be avoided and the game can continue on as quickly as possible.
Sorry this was such a long post. Thank you for reading this far. I hope to see you all on the fields having fun!
