MODS Members,

With the ongoing forest fires, primarily along the North-Eastern side of the province, we’ve seen an increase in air quality warnings this summer that were previously few and far between here in Winnipeg.

At the Board level, our Governance Committee has been active in amending our Severe Weather Policy to include a section on air quality. This has been based on Ultimate Canada’s existing policy on air quality. We have prioritized the review of this policy, as we recognize that it is helpful for everyone to know how the decision to play or not is being made - similarly to with thunder/lightning and extreme heat. This updated policy has just been passed at the board level, and will be available on the website shortly.

With any physical activity there is a component of risk that is present, and we recognize that it is not reasonable to expect that we completely eliminate all risks before playing. As with other extreme weather situations, we are following the guidance of the subject experts to manage the risks accordingly to provide as safe of an environment as is reasonably possible. At the end of the day, each participant needs to decide if they are ok with the level of risk involved in any activity, and participate accordingly.

Daniel
