This is not the letter to the membership that I thought I would be writing right now. Wait! This seems familiar? What day is it? What month is it? Oh god, time has lost all meaning!

Hey everyone! I hope you are all having more success than I am in keeping yourselves busy during this time of social distancing. It seems Manitoba as a whole has done fairly well at keeping the spread of this virus slow. That’s the great news! Unfortunately the bad news is this whole thing is not over, not even close, and as people get more and more stir crazy we run the risk of making things worse if we don’t temper our expectations.

History tells us, trying to get back to “normal” too quickly can have devastating effects. All this to say! While the staff and the Board want nothing more than to be able to restart leagues so we can all go out and play some Ultimate and or Disc Golf, especially in this beautiful weather, we need to approach this as carefully and as safely as possible.

The Government restrictions are still in place, as well as those by Sport Manitoba. We must and we will follow those restrictions. A few days ago the Government released a plan to start loosening those restrictions. It will be a “slow and measured” approach. MODS Staff and Board will be looking into all our options, but we must get approval from Sport Manitoba before we can act on anything. Safety is the priority. So please be patient, and together we can all get through this. In the mean time keep an eye on our website, social media posts and newsletters, for more information!

Enough with the bad news!

Just because our leagues haven’t been running it doesn’t mean things haven’t been busy! MODS Staff and Board still have a lot to work through!

Our Staff have been busy planning for a POSSIBLE return to play at some point this year, (fingers crossed) and because we don’t know exactly when or what that might look like, they have been planning for a number of different scenarios. Our hope is we can get things up and running as quickly as possible, IF we are given the go ahead. Our Staff has also been working on getting website improvements implemented, they are preparing for our financial year end, and the list goes on!

Speaking of Finances! Just before our last board meeting we voted in our new Interim Board Treasurer! I want to thank Mike Mose for stepping up and joining us during this crazy time! He has already started getting familiar with MODS finances, with the help of our staff, and is helping us improve how we track and report that information. For those that might be curious, I am hoping we can share more information on our finances once we get past our financial year end. What I can say right now is that thanks to the foresight and hard work of past Volunteers, Board members and Staff, MODS has been able to weather this unprecedented time far better than most. The organization owes a big debt of gratitude to everyone who helped get us here! But more work still needs to be done!

The Board as a whole has also been busy! We have continued to meet online, and with the help of the staff have been keeping informed on the pandemic and how it has affected our organization.

The Board has continued our work on policies and procedures as well as a new Board Handbook. The handbook will hopefully help future board members learn what their roles and responsibilities are, and help them hit the ground running. We are also looking into what our AGM might look like later this year, and will be working with the staff on figuring out how we will pull that off!

And because it’s never too early! Maybe you are looking for something new and interesting to do? You might want to consider becoming a Board member. Or maybe you know someone who you think would be really good at it? Start thinking about it now! Our new “normal” is bound to be much different than it was even a year ago. You could help shape what MODS looks like in the future! Sorry for the long update! I hope you all stay safe!
