Why Sarah Jacobsohn is leading the next generation of junior athletes into greatness...

This years #1 position in the MODS Top 10 list goes to Sarah Jacobsohn... There was simply no other athlete in the province with her accomlished and distinguished resume.

Sarah's journey took national attention when she was 15, which was the year she not only played with Gray Academy on their varsity team (as their captain) but also made the Team Canada U20 roster and travelled to Poland where she helped the team win a gold medal at the world championships.

Since then she has continued to lead by example, skill and spirit with Gray Academy and has transitioned from proving herself as a young kid amongst older teens - to leading team, community and country... Inspiring boys and girls alike.

And maybe that's the most amazing thing... Sarah has become a special name in Ultimate. When teams are playing against Gray, they talk about her legacy between high school and the provincial team program.

When the summer rolls around (and Team Manitoba heads to Ultimate Canada CUC's), it's other provinces whispering her name... It's the opponents who don't want to play her and the fans who come to watch her... and watching her and MOFO Women this past summer was a golden moment for the program and team!

When she puts on the national team jersey - other countries know her name, they take video and stats of her.

And yet still, Sarah continues to demonstrate the quality that we in Ultimate find the most endearing and valuable in our sport. Sarah shows spirit to match her talent, and that combination has put her in a position to succeed but also lead and inspire beyond barriers, genders and age.

As she finishes her grade 12 season and high school career, Sarah leads other Manitobans to Team Canada this summer and with her grows the next generation of Ultimate greatness...

But first the new #1 has to concentrate on Provincials and helping her Gray Academy team and friends build off their bronze medal at high school nationals just 3 weeks ago as they seek their first high school ultimate championship.

The High School top tier is shaping up to be a wild finish to the season, provincials expected to be a great junior weekend...

The team coming into the event with the biggest guns and highest ranking are the Kelvin Clippers, who have the most to lose this weekend having won the High School National Championship less than a month ago and hope to carry that momentum on through use of their deep roster of elite talent. Look no further than the top 10 list to see how they had multiple players fall into the top 5 this year and are veteran heavy. Coach Willem Konrad will be looking to add to their programs legacy this weekend despite the tough challengers.

One of those teams waiting in the Wings are Westgate who come into the championships this weekend with a strong record, great talent and looking to build off their experience at the Ultimate Canada CHSUC's earlier this month. With strong coaching and unreal balance they are a top seed amongts high school teams and a nightmare matchup for anyone.

Perennial powerhouse SJR won a key match this week heading into the event, and Dean Wright's program, army of coaches and top level student athletes always come to this weekend looking for a shot at another banner and title for their historied program. Their team looks to be peaking at the right time and will be very tough opponents all weekend.

Gray Academy varsity team will be rolling into provincials well rested, having not played league the last week of the season (seeing back to back byes). Their team will not only boast the #1 player in the province, but a slew of other talents, athletes and weapons as they pursue a tier one championship this weekend. Their head coach Carmen has the team fired up and focused while also keenly aware of the other top teams sharing in the same dream.

The event will also see the High School Spirit Champions from 2018 making a return to the event. Oxford House arrived Thursday and will be training all day Friday to showcase their programs growth and their passion for spirit and Ultimate.

This years provincial championships starts on Saturday May 25th with 20 teams playing in 5 divisions for the middle school event and 36 teams in 9 divisions playing in the high school event. Spectators are welcome for free all day at Maple Grove Park at the corner of St Mary Ave and Frobisher Rd.
